Four women, across four generations, equally funny, ferocious and feminist – ‘My Mother Said I Never Should’ is a celebration of womanhood, from the perspective of individual women at various times in their lives. Come and celebrate with them.

The Plot

Doris, born in 1900, marries Jack and daughter Margaret is born in 1931.

Margaret marries Ken and has daughter Jackie in 1952.

Graham says he'll leave his wife, when Jackie has Rosie in 1971.

What does Rosie want? And where did everything actually begin?

In her search for the truth about the adult world, Charlotte Keatley explores the relationships between mothers and daughters - and whether we are ruled by our own history or whether change is possible.

"Sugar and Spice - and all things ... nice...?"

Our Aims

Our aim is to engage with community and produce thought provoking drama on contemporary issues.

This production is supporting the work of single parent charity, Gingerbread, who this year celebrate their 100th anniversary. Profits from the production will be donated to support the work of Gingerbread.

Here are a few words from Gingerbread themselves:
"We are the leading national charity working with single parent families. Since 1918, we have been at the forefront of shaping policy and services that support single parents. Today, there are two million single parent families in the country. We champion their voices and keep their needs at the heart of everything we do, offering support through our campaigning, peer support and advice services."

Participation

If you have skills to offer in graphic design, photography, stage lighting, set design, costume making or administrative skills and would like to gain further experiences, we'd be delighted to hear from you.

We are also pleased, of course, to hear from theatre makers of all shapes, sizes, ages and backgrounds. However, please remember that we aim to do plays which are short tours in the local region, so participants must be willing to travel, over the course of a production.
